Questions

The things merchants actually ask us.

If your question is not here, email help@wynk.cash or ask inside the app — support is in the same place as your transactions.

Getting started

What do I need to sign up?

A South African cellphone number and the name of your shop. That is the whole first step — we send a one-time PIN to confirm the number.

Inside the app you will then be asked for your ID document, a selfie for the liveness check, your business details and the bank account you want to be settled into. Most shops complete this in under fifteen minutes and are accepting payments the same day.

Do I need a company or a VAT number?

No. A sole proprietor trading under their own name can sign up with an ID document. If you are registered, adding your company registration and VAT number lets us produce statements you can file directly.

Do I have to buy a card machine?

No, and we would rather you did not start with one. A printed QR code costs nothing, and tap-to-phone turns an NFC-capable Android handset into a contactless card machine. Add hardware only when the queue justifies it.

Fees and settlement

Why is the closed-loop fee so much lower than the card fee?

Because most of a card fee is not ours. Interchange is what the card scheme charges to move money between the customer's bank and yours. When both the payer and the shop are WynkPay accounts, there is no interbank leg at all — the ledger moves the balance internally. There is no interchange to pass on, so we do not invent one.

When do I get my money?

Every business day. We run two settlement cycles, at 10:00 and 15:00, and pay the net balance to your linked bank account after the afternoon cycle. There is no fee for standard settlement.

If you need today's takings before 15:00, instant settlement moves them for R6.50 per payout.

What exactly is deducted before I am paid?

Your acceptance fees for the day, less any VAS commission you earned, less any cash-advance instalment or stock-on-credit repayment due. Each line is itemised on the settlement record — you can see the arithmetic rather than a single net figure.

Are there monthly fees, minimums or a lock-in?

Not on QR and tap-to-phone. No monthly fee, no minimum turnover and no termination fee. Hardware subscriptions are the exception: those are 24-month rent-to-own agreements, and ending one early costs the capital still outstanding, without an interest penalty.

When things go wrong

What happens when the network drops?

QR payments need the customer to be online, but everything on your side keeps working. Card taps continue below a floor limit of R500 per transaction and R2 000 per terminal per day; those transactions queue on the device and clear automatically when signal returns.

Your top-selling airtime and electricity products keep selling from an on-device voucher cache. Everything you do offline is queued, capped at 500 operations, and synchronised in order once you are back.

What is the Comms Box for?

Load-shedding and congested towers, mainly. It is a router with two LTE modems on two different networks and a 48 Ah battery, so the shop's till network stays up for roughly eight hours without grid power. It reports its own battery and signal back to us every minute.

A customer says they paid but I do not see it.

Open the transaction in the app and check its status. A closed-loop payment is final within a second; a PayShap payment is near-real-time but can sit in flight briefly; a card tap taken offline shows as queued until it clears.

If the customer's app shows a reference and yours does not, send us that reference from the support screen and we will trace it against the sponsor bank's records.

How do disputes and chargebacks work?

A customer can dispute a transaction from their app. Our team reviews it within two business days. Card disputes may become chargebacks, in which case the funds are held in a dispute reserve while the issuer decides — we notify you on WhatsApp the moment that happens, and you are charged nothing if the dispute is resolved in your favour.

Credit

How is the cash advance priced?

As a single fixed cost, quoted in rands before you accept. There is no interest accruing on a balance, so the number does not grow if you have a slow month, and there is no penalty for settling early.

Repayment is a fixed percentage of each day's settlement rather than a monthly debit order, so a quiet week automatically becomes a smaller instalment and nothing can bounce.

Will you check my credit record?

Yes. Every credit facility — merchant advance, stock on credit, buy-now-pay-later and overdraft — is assessed for affordability as required by the National Credit Act, and that assessment includes a credit bureau enquiry. You consent to that separately from opening an account, and declining it does not affect your ability to take payments.

What happens if I cannot repay an advance?

Talk to us early. Because repayment tracks your settlement, a slow period reduces the instalment automatically. If trading stops altogether we will agree a plan with you in writing. We do not use reckless collection practices, and every step follows the National Credit Act.

Security and data

Is my customers' card data safe on my phone?

Yes. Tap-to-phone runs a PCI CPoC-certified kernel: the PIN is captured in the device's secure element and never enters the app's memory, and card numbers are tokenised at the sponsor bank. WynkPay does not store card numbers anywhere in its systems.

What do you do with my personal information?

We process it to run your account, meet our FICA and National Credit Act obligations, and prevent fraud. We do not sell it. Marketing consent is asked for separately and can be withdrawn without affecting your account.

You can request a copy of everything we hold, or ask us to delete what we are not legally required to keep, from the app or by emailing privacy@wynk.cash. Our POPIA notice sets out the full detail, including retention periods.

Is WynkPay a bank?

No. WynkPay is an authorised financial services provider. Wallet balances are held in trust at our sponsor bank, a registered South African bank, and are not lent out. Credit products are provided under registration with the National Credit Regulator.
